This document does not claim 100% correct (which in this case is very relative), nor for completeness (for more information on resume writing at the bottom shows the number of references, which, in turn, is also incomplete). This document only expresses a personal opinion of the author.
Resume must be written for a specific area of activity (even better – for a particular position). Nobody wants resume «jack of all trades” (even if you really are). Do not pretend to resume in one to several significantly different positions (such as software developer and sysadmin). As a last resort, make a few resume (for example, one – as the software developer, the second – as the sysadmin) and send each company only one (of course, one that is more suited to them). The exception is recruiter-s – it is sometimes possible to send both the resume, cover letter explaining to the situation.
English in the resume must be perfect. Even if you think you know English well enough anyway let read your resume to someone else (preferably someone with a native English). Do not trust your knowledge and spelling– banish spellchecker. Do not trust spellchecker-in – check again yourself. Remember – bad English in the resume reduces your chances to infinitesimal.
I did not discover America if I say that the only purpose of Resume – is to get an invitation to interview. Now we think, who will make that decision (to invite or not to invite). Typically, this will be either a person from human resources, or recruiter. Try to put yourself in the recruiter-a (this is difficult, but doable) and assess – and I would take this man for the job? It should be borne in mind that any person from human resources, or recruiter, as a rule, absolutely not versed in that area, for which the staff is looking for. The process of dropping out (eg screening) usually takes place on the basis of formal correspondence resume and issued by human resources requirements for the post.
As a rule, resume consists of the following sections – Personal Information, Objective (optional), Qualifications Summary (optional), Education, Professional Certifications (if any), Work Experience, Employment During School (optional), Publications (if any), References ( optional).
Section Pers onal Information. Do not include information on gender, age, nationality, marital status – in short, everything that could be the reason for the charges and employer-discrimination (as is easily seen, employer-s do not like). Perhaps, if the latter had not Work experience in Canada, it is to include a phrase such as: «Status in Canada – Landed Immigrant» (or «Eligible Foreign Worker»).
Section Objective (optional). You can write something like «A position in database administration where five years RDBMS experience would be needed.» That in addition to indicate which position you are applying for, are not out of place to themselves unobtrusively poreklamirovat.
Section Qualifications Summary (optional). As already mentioned, screening usually occurs on the basis of formal correspondence resume and requirements to post. Therefore, it is necessary to maximally facilitate the task of reconciling human resources requirements and your resume. To this end, it is desirable to create a special section of the resume (eg., Qualifications Summary), which make all the information about the skills, and next to each important to the recruiter-a skill should be the figure – experience in years. For example: RDBMS – 4.5 years, Oracle – 1.5 years, Sybase – 3 years … These figures need to be confirmed in the section Work experience.
Section of Education. It is necessary to specify all their education after high school in reverse chronological order (Institute, and all deserve a mention (and relevant!) courses). Section of Education may stand as before Work experience, and after it: first, should be something that will make for recruiter-a big impression. Ie if you have education – Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge or MIT, the first has to be education, but if the last Work experience was IBM, Nortel and Royal Bank – the Work experience.
Section Work experience. Here it is necessary to list all the relevant place your work in reverse chronological order with the job description, the detailed description is generally decreases as the distance from the present moment. Relevant means that if you had a job in a biography that does not fit well with the position you are applying for (eg., An accountant for a programmer), it is best not to mention it (but be prepared to answer the interview question is quite unlikely – “And what is this gap in your employment history?”).
Section Work experience – Action verbs. Section «Work Experience», usually read quite fluently (if read at all). It is therefore not out of place to begin with the so-called sentence action verbs – verbs expressing action, such as designed, developed, made, organized, etc. These verbs are much more attracted the attention of the reader than, eg., Rather weak «participated». For the same reason it makes sense to include in the description of the latest (or all) positions subsection «Accomplishments». If you dig in the memory, it is possible for almost any job to think of something to be proud of. That’s “something” and it is necessary to enter in the subsection «Accomplishments».
